Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide health problem with increasing incidence, prevalence, morbidity, and mortality.1, 2, 3 The prevalence of early stage CKD approaches 20 million (or 10.8% of the U.S. adult population), and has grown by 42% over the past 5 years.4 The rates of new cases of CKD are more than four times higher in African-Americans and 1.5 times higher in Asians or Pacific Islanders than in whites.5
