2018
This essay investigates the history of the Clube de Economistas (Economists’ Club) and itsjournal Economica Brasileira. The club was created in 1955 in Rio de Janeiro, bringingtogether nationalist-developmentalist economists. Celso Furtado conceived and led boththe club and the journal. The club came to an end in 1964, with the military coup. We tellthe story about the origins of the club. Created amidst the 1954 political crisis, the clubemerged from deteriorating relations and increased tensions between nationalist economistsand the FGV-RJ liberal economists and their journal Revista Brasileira de Economia. The leader of this last group was Eugenio Gudin. An even more ambitious goal of the clubwas to establish an original school of thought in the country. Finally, we survey the literaturepublished in the journal Economica Brasileira.
