Reversion martensitic phase transformation induced {332} twinning in metastable β-Ti alloys

2020
Abstract This paper presents in-situ observations of the reversion-martensitic-phase-transformation induced {3 3 2} 〈1 1 3〉β twinning process. Our observations in a β-quenched Ti-7Mo-3Nb-3Cr-3Al alloy demonstrate that, instead of {3 3 2} 〈1 1 3〉β twinning, stress-induced-α″ martensitic-phase-transformation takes place during deformation. However, once the α″ deformation bands are lifted-out from the bulk matrix through focused-ion-beam milling and the stresses are relieved, those deformation bands consisting of {1 3 0} 〈3 1 0〉α″ compound-twins reversely transform back into {3 3 2} 〈1 1 3〉β twins.
