Overhead sensor utilizing Hyperspectral Imaging technology

1999
The objective of this paper is to describe how weapon systems can utilize space and airborne overhead sensors which have Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI). It is proposed that weapon systems can use HSI data for defense planning, ground target recognition, ground target position update, damage assessment, and mine detection. HSI sensors can also perform these functions for camouflaged, concealed, and disguised targets. The HSI sensor that will be discussed in this paper would operate in the long wave infrared (LWIR) for day/night operation. It will utilize a Mercurous Chloride AcoustoOptic Tunable Filter (AOTF) and on-board processing to allow near-real time (~2 seconds) information reporting through existing communication channels.
