An optical level comprising: an optical assembly (62) for generating at least one beam (64) of visible light, the optical assembly including pins (65) support; a platform (66) that includes cradles into which the support pins for supporting the optical assembly are inserted; an oscillation mechanism for relaxation provided by the support pins and cradles that support the optical assembly to rotate at least one degree of freedom about the support pins, wherein stiction between the support pins and cradles you can maintain the optical assembly in place even when the platform is tilted relative to level; at least one actuator (63) arranged to cause movement of the optical assembly by applying sufficient torque to the optical assembly overcomes stiction mechanism slip-stick allowing the optical assembly to pivot about the support pins to a level position; a sensor (80) for providing signals that can be used to determine whether the platform is level; and a control circuit for receiving signals from the sensor and controllably activating the at least one actuator to overcome stiction of the oscillation mechanism for relaxation and tilt the optical assembly towards level so that the at least one visible light beam is substantially level.
