Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (UniVATS) left upper lobectomy in 9 steps

2021
Abstract Background Uniportal VATS (UniVATS) lobectomy has gained widespread use since 2011, and its principles are used to treat complex cases of lung cancer. Recently, an effort to standardize the technique was made by the Uniportal VATS Interest Group. Operation UniVATS left upper lobe lobectomy was performed in a 62-year-old male patient with two distinct lesions in the upper lobe. Final pathology showed squamous carcinoma in the more central lesion (pT1aN0) and adenocarcinoma (papillary predominant, pT1aN0) in the second, peripheral nodule. Overall, 18 lymph nodes were removed from the hilar (level 11 and 12) or mediastinal (levels 5, 7 and 9) stations. The technique of UniVATS left upper lobe lobectomy is described in a series of 9 distinct steps, each with an accompanying video. Conclusion UniVATS is a safe and efficient minimally invasive approach for lobectomy, but it requires careful planning and coordination by the operating team.
