Analytical Based Enhancement of the Torque Production Capability of Flux Switching PM Machines

2019
Flux switching permanent magnet machines (FSPMMs) have been considered viable candidates to replace interior PM machines in automotive applications since they can offer high efficiency, simple structure and high speed operation. In this paper, a simple analytical model is developed to predict the electromagnetic torque of FSPMMs. Moreover, a finite element (FE) study is carried out in order to validate the analytical model. Following the characterization of the initial concept, a sizing approach aimed to the enhancement of the torque production capability is performed out thanks to the analytically predicted torque-position characteristic. It leads to the distinction of a selected topology characterised by high performances in term of torque mean value and ripple. These results are validated by the ones predicted by FE analyses model.
