In this essay, the identity of Suleyman Tevfik as a translator, who comes into prominence with his various professional identities in our cultural and literary systems, will be highlighted in terms of his position and significance in our history of translation, after his identities as a teacher, a journalist, an author and a lexicologist have been touched on shortly. It is aimed to conduct a complete and comprehensive study on both the original and translation works of Suleyman Tevfik as well as his identity as a translator, with an emphasis on his selection of original work to be translated along with his purpose of translation. Suleyman Tevfik, who speaks Arabic, Persian, English, Italian, French and Armenian languages, has original works on a wide variety of fields like language, literature, Yrd. Doc. The leading novelists of French literature such as Emile Zola, Paul de Kock, Ponson du Terrail, Maurice Leblanc, Pierre Louys and Pierre Benoit are among the authors the works of which Suleyman Tevfik translated. Besides these, he also translated some works whose writers are anonymous. Suleyman Tevfik, who also has translations from detective fiction -which turned out to be a popular literary genre in Turkish cultural and literary system after the Second Constitutional Era, translated a French-Turkish dictionary with Avan-zâde Suleyman, who was recognized as one of the master translators of the relevant era. The data gained from this research, which intends to analyze in depth the identity of Suleyman Tevfik as a translator based on Suleyman Tevfik's original work on the genre of memoir with the title II. Mesrutiyet'ten Cumhuriyet'e Elli Yillik Hatiralarim (My Semicentennial Memories from the Second Constitutional Era to the Republic Period (ed. by Tahsin Yildirim - Şaban Ozdemir, 2011) and the prefaces he wrote for his translation works, will be assessed with reference to the “skopos” concept of Hans J. Vermeer, who is a German scientist of translation studies, and the “culture repertoire” concept of Itamar Even-Zohar, who is an Israeli scientist of translation studies.
