As a matter of fact, although neither ofthese two authors seems to have set foot on Spanish soil they both incorporated detailedinformation provided by enlightened visitors of the previous generation into their travelguides for Spain’s visitors. The amount of data that Volkmann drew from John Talbot Dillon’sTravels through Spain is a telling example of this. Volkmann and Baedeker both knew how toselect and disseminate what a reading audience and potential visitors of their own generationwould most appreciate from the legacy of those enlightened writers.
