Intrinsic bioattenuation of chlorinated VOCs

A multi-step approach can be used successfully to assess bioattenuation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwater. This process should involve a thorough review of historical hydrogeologic data, and data on the fate of chemicals of concern, so that a representative conceptual site model can be developed. This conceptual site model can then be used in developing a groundwater model which takes biodegradation processes into account so that predictions can be made regarding the effectiveness of potential active versus passive remedial technologies. Finally, collection and analysis of site-specific biogeochemical data can be used to verify the model`s assumptions and predictions of the effectiveness of intrinsic bioattenuation for chlorinated VOCs.
