Gas exchange in the melting of aluminosilicate glass

1986
The authors investigate the liberation and absorption of gas by the batch (or glass) during heating to study the gas exchange at the glass-furnace atmosphere and batch-furnace atmosphere interfaces during glass melting. The study is made to reveal those processes which may cause the formation of bubbles. The subject of the study was a glass of the composition Li/sub 2/O, Na/sub 2/O, B/sub 2/O/sub 3/, SiO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/ and As/sub 2/O/sub 3/. An analysis of the furnace atmosphere above the surface of a glass melt can be used only to study the processes which occur in batch melting and glass fining.
