Topology optimization of muffler internal partitions using a mixed finite element formulation

2012
The internal partition configuration of a muffler affects its acoustical transmission characteristics significantly. But it is difficult to use systematic optimization methods to design muffler problems. In acoustic-structure interaction problems, the pressure and displacement fields are governed by Helmholtz equation and the elasticity equation, respectively. The main objective of this proposed paper is to maximize the transmission loss at target frequencies by optimizing partition layouts inside a muffler chamber by the mixed formulation (u/p-formulation) of an acoustic-structure topology optimization problem using method of moving asymptotes(MMA).
