Crossing speed analysis for pedestrian at signalized intersection

2004
Pedestrian crossing speed at signalized intersection is an important parameter in traffic safety analysis and traffic signal design. The surveying and analyzing 42 crosswalks of 11 intersections of Harbin, come to a conclusion that as a whole, average pedestrian crossing speed is 1.47 m/s, for 85% of pedestrians, the crossing speed is 1. 74 m/s and 15% speed is 1. 19 m/s. The impacts of pedestrian age and sex, foot-crossing length, number of crossing pedestrians and green time on pedestrian crossing speed are analyzed, it is then pointed out that when designing signal intersection, 15% speed which is 1. 19 m/s should be used, and which satisfies demands of more than 85% pedestrian. In the area where the elderly often go to, the design speed should be 15% speed of the elderly, that is 1. 07 m/s.
