Coagulation Disorders in Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract This chapter will review the process of normal coagulation in infants and children, examine the various tests of the clotting mechanism, review the alterations of hemostasis in congenital heart disease, consider the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and ventricular assist device (VAD) use on hemostasis, and develop strategies for the diagnosis and management of bleeding and thrombosis after pediatric cardiac surgery.
