Using EGNOS with Standard GPS-equipped Mobile Phones

2010
Today some 20% of mobile phones in use in Europe include a GNSS chipset and the penetration is expected to exceed 50% in the next 5 years. The present work demonstrates how SBAS (EGNOS) corrections can be applied to the positioning information provided by these mobile phones, even if EGNOS satellites are not visible and even when the GNSS chipset in the phone does not support SBAS. Thanks to these corrections, positioning accuracy and user experience can be improved. This paper details the technical implementation of EGNOS in standard GPS-equipped mobile phones and the preliminary results obtained using a HTC Legend smartphone under Google’s Android operating system.
