Prediction of Pressure Phenomena in Dual-Chamber High-Low Pressure Guns and Its Application to Structural Analysis

2016
It is well known that zero-dimensional internal ballistics codes have serious limitations for the prediction of the phenomena that occur in dual-chamber high-low pressure guns. In this paper, pressure-time calculations within the stabilizer of a 120 mm mortar bomb are performed by using an analytical model based on conservation laws. These theoretical results are compared with experimentally obtained pressure-time curves and applied to structural analysis carried out by using ANSYS software in order to evaluate the influence of pressure in dual-chamber high-low pressure guns. Under firing conditions, the material undergoes big pressure rises in very short time periods. The dynamic stress sustained by the material is simulated. As a result, it is found that the material has a very different behavior to that shown by the action of static strains.
