Fluconazole infused via a nephrostomy tube: a novel and effective route of delivery

1995
SUMMARY Fluconazole is an effective oral or intravenous anti–fungal agent. It undergoes little or no metabolism with 70–80% of the drug excreted unchanged in the urine. There is no readily available information on its effectiveness in treating fungal urinary tract infections in the presence of chronic renal failure. We report a case of chronic renal failure with ureteric obstruction complicated by infection with Candida albicans that was successfully treated by the infusion of fluconazole via a nephrostomy tube. There were no complications related to the use of fluconazole.
