A two-dimensional position-sensitive detection system for the 8Be nuclei in heavy ion reactions

1991
Abstract We report the construction and operation of an 8 Be detection system, which is comprised of a paired drift chamber as ΔE detectors and two closely-spaced Si(Li) detectors as E detectors. The energy range suitable for this system is E Be = 20–100 MeV where the solid angle ranges from 4 to 1 msr. Two-dimensional position information for coincident α-particles makes possible an accurate kinematical identification of 8 Be g.s. nuclei even under large α-background.
