The Storage, Rejuvenation, and Restorage of Human Red Cells for Periods up to 56 Days.

1974
Abstract : Human red cells may be stored at 4 C for periods up to 56 days and then successfully rejuvenated by the Valeri PIGPA procedure. The rejuvenated red cells have near normal levels of ATP and 2,3-DPG and retain these elevated levels for at least 4 days following rejuvenation. This greatly increases the usefulness of outdated stored red cells, both in terms of reclaiming the red cells for freezing or in rejuvenation to extend the outdating period of 4 C stored blood to 42 or 56 days.
