Design and Implementation of Solar Based Ice Block Machine in Remote Island. Case Study: Maratua Island, Indonesia

2018
Maratua Island is one of remote islands in Indonesia and located near to the outer border of Indonesia territory. Most of people there rely their life as fishermen. In order to preserve the catches, they need ice blocks but have to pay at high price. One of the solutions is producing ice blocks in Maratua Island itself. Since there is no national grid system available, alternative energy resources become indisputable option. Basically, the design consist of solar off grid plant to electrify ice block machine and additional system. This system had been implemented in Teluk Alulu, Maratua Island, during 2 years project from 2016. The total of 56kW solar power system had been installed to meet the total demand output by 110,54kWh/day. Output demand was separated into primary load for an ice machine and secondary load for additional devices such as water pump and lightings. The system was designed to produce ice block up to 2 tons/day. Nevertheless, 500kgs/day ice had been successfully produced by solar-powered ice machine during commissioning session.
