Lectotypification of Doronicum carpetanum (Asteraceae)

1991
During a taxonomic study (Perez-Morales & Penas-Merino, 1990) of the Iberian species of Doronicum L. sect. Doronicum, problems were noted due to the great variability present in Doronicum carpetanum Boiss. & Reuter ex Willk. It became necessary to check and evaluate the type material, type locality, and differential features mentioned in the protologue. Several localities were cited by Willkomm (1865). In the Coimbra herbarium (COI) where Willkomm's plants are deposited, we found only two sheets labelled as Doronicum carpetanum collected in any of these localities. One is from "Monte de la Regaliza", Le6n (Spain) [the spelling "Regalira" in the protologue is an error] and was collected by Bourgeau. The other is from Sierra de Guadarrama and was collected by Boissier and Reuter. The latter sheet is labelled: "Doronicum carpetanum/ Boiss. et Reuter/ Sierra de Guadarrama/ Boissier et Reuter. Pefia Lara/ Julio 1858". It bears two plants and, being the only specimen in the Willkomm herbarium to be directly connected with Boissier and Reuter, it is clearly type material of Doronicum carpetanum Boiss. & Reuter ex Willk. Both plants agree with Willkomm's description. Under Art. 7.4 and 7.5 of the Code (Greuter & al., 1988), we designate as lectotype of Doronicum carpetanum the plant mounted on the left, which appears to be in a better state of conservation. The specimen on the right is a duplicate of the lectotype, or isolectotype.
