Properties of the schungites of Karelia and prospects of their technological utilization

Data are presented on selected properties of schungites allowing them to be considered as promising for the replacement of the traditional coke in high-temperature metallurgical processes. The results of scanning electron microscopy and local X-ray spectral analysis of the schungites, and also their investigation by thermal analysis give ground to the possibilities of using schungites instead of metallurgical coke and silica-containing materials in processes of producing silicon carbide, siliceous ferroalloys, case iron, phosphorus, etc.
