Modernism; Photography; Art

1989
Abstract Though Modernism's incubation must be put in the nineteenth century, there are compelling reasons for seeing it emerge as a strengthened and ubiquitous force about 1915 – 20. These are the dates offered in the recent book by Van Deren Coke and Diana du Pont, Photography - A Faat of Modernism.2 This amplification of the earlier modem spirit, in more mordant dimensions, is seen by Coke - and has been seen by others - as exacerbated by the physical and psychical upheavals of the First World War.
