Radiation Damage Effects in Solid Wastes

1983
Abstract Studies of the effects of radiation on glasses are described. The objective of these studies is to permit improved predictions on the radiation stability of glasses containing nuclear wastes over very long time-scales (typically 106 yr). To achieve results within laboratory time-scales necessitates the use of simulation experiments. A promising technique to simulate the long-term radiation dose to the glass is by means of charged particle bombardment. We describe the irradiation of single crystal SiO2 with 60 keV Ne+ Ar+, Kr+ and Bi+ ions. The effect of the irradiation is monitored by subsequently bombarding the material in a crystallographically aligned direction with MeV α-particles and determining the Rutherford Backscattering (RBS) spectrum. This technique provides a measure of the amount of disorder created in the solid by the radiation. This disorder is correlated with the fluence, the mass of the bombarding particle and the irradiation temperature. The results to date have provided some in...
