Effect of abrasive particle size on fraction of debris removed from plowing volume in abrasive wear

Abstract Virgin surface sliding and repeated sliding tests were carried out for the pure metal pins and the hardened bearing steel (SUJ 2) pins against abrasive papers with CC100–CC1000 grains. The mean depth S p / b of micro-grooves, the ratio α b of the volume of removed as debris to the volume of micro-grooves and the mean surface slope angle θ were calculated from the profile curves measured at sampling intervals Δ x ≒1 μm on worn surfaces and the relationships between their parameters were obtained experimentally. From the work presented the following results can be drawn. (1) The α b values obtained from the analyses of profile curves on worn surfaces showed the sharp edged degrees of abrasive grains for each sliding distance. (2) The α b values could be estimated by the simple virgin surface sliding test, which had the short and limited sliding distance depended on the hardness of metal pins. (3) The increase of the α b values with increasing hardness of metal pins are attributed to little plastic deformation and little pile-up ridges generated in process of cutting.
