A General Study of Tornado Generated Missiles

1974
Abstract This paper presents a rational procedure for calculating the velocity of tornado-generated missiles. The procedure includes the setup of a simplified three-dimensional tornado wind model, a mechanism for the missile to be injected into, and sustained in, the wind field, as well as the description of missile acceleration in the wind field, based on the centrifugal force consideration. The maximum elevation which a missile can reach is also investigated. Throughout the study conservative and yet consistent assumptions are made for the orientations and aerodynamic characteristics of the missile.
