Influence of Type of Deicing Chemical and Cement on Salt Scaling of Concrete

This study compares how the degree of scaling deterioration varies according to the types of cement and deicing chemicals used. The types of cement used were ordinary portland cement, fly ash cement, and blast-furnace slag cement, while the types of deicing chemicals used were chlorides and acetates. The amount of scaling experienced for each of the cement types and how this changed over time can be explained by the hydration of the cement and admixtures. Furthermore, the variations that were observed in the amount of scaling for each of the deicing chemical types are probably attributable to the differential strain that is generated in the boundary between the concrete and ice due to reductions in the temperature.
