After the Gypsies

After the gypsies at the end of the journey it all went easy, no more quick-eyed surprises. The cities looked tired, the work was pleasant, the sun shone a little, the churches were empty. Still, that first night at a friend's house, exhaustion almost giving way to sleep but they were back and a feeling of violation, as though even this room at the edge of the city were not impenetrably safe, turning, turning in the unfamiliar bed with the stunned awareness of their hands.
