ADMINISTRAÇÃO DE Xylopia brasiliensis Spreng. (Annonaceae) PREVINE A INIBIÇÃO DO COMPLEXO I DA CADEIA RESPIRATÓRIA MITOCONDRIAL EM PULMÕES SUBMETIDOS À EXPOSIÇÃO AGUDA DE CARVÃO MINERAL Administration of Xylopia brasiliensis Spreng. (Annonaceae) prevents respiratory chain complex I inhibition in lungs of rats submitted to acute coal exposure

2012
Coal dust exposure can induce alveolar inflammation as pneumoconiosis. Several studies report important biological effects of Xylopia brasiliensis (X. brasiliensis), used in Brazilian folk medicine for respiratory diseases in miners. In this work, we evaluated the effect of acute coal dust intratracheal instillation on activity of complexs of mitochondrial respiratory chain and effect of treatment with X. brasiliensis extracts in lung of rats submitted to acute coal dust intratracheal instillation. The animals were divided into five groups: (1) treatment with gavage administration of water and a single tracheal instillation of saline; (2) treatment with gavage administration of water and a single tracheal instillation of coal dust; (3) treatment with gavage administration of X. brasiliensis hydroalcoholic extract and a single Artigo Original Fisiopatologia X. brasiliensis e mitocondria Revista Inova Saude, Criciuma, vol. 1, nov. 2012 88 tracheal instillation of coal dust; (4) treatment with gavage administration of extra virgin olive oil and a single tracheal instillation of coal dust; (5) treatment with gavage administration X. brasiliensis oil extract and a single tracheal instillation of coal dust. Our results showed that complex I activity was significantly inhibited and this inhibition was reversed by treatment with X. brasiliensis. In conclusion, our study indicates that X. brasiliensis is a promising plant to adjuvant treatment of the pneumoconiosis caused by acute exposition of mineral coal.
