존 업다이크의『돌아온 토끼』

2011
This study will describe aspects of alienation that Harry, the hero of the Rabbit Redux feels through his behavior and consciousness in American society. Harry, who rejects to a standard of values other than his own inherent self and inner desires, exerts the independent self-will to choose and to be responsible to all matters in Rabbit Redux. A conventional story line does inhabit Rabbit Redux. Rabbit Redux is effectively vulgar and sometimes even efficiently perverse. The sexual exercises in Rabbit Redux usually have an ulterior purpose. Skeeter exerts a revenge on Jill’s body for what he perceives as the white man’s humiliation of his race; Jill makes love to Rabbit in lieu of paying rent. Rabbit copulates with Jill as a substitute for his wife and with Peggy(on the night of the fire) as a social obligation. Janice appropriates her lover’s body to celebrate and assert her discovery of feminine identity. Mim not only sells her body but also derives her pragmatic values from her call girl experiences. In Rabbit Redux, the author describes man’s fears, anxieties, emptiness, frustrations, corruptions and destructions. Man’s desire and loneliness in all human relations are related to Harry Angstrom and shows how the existence acts in the frustrations of life and death and assertiveness of the family and home.
