Chapter 19 – Connected Health in Clinical Trials: The Patient as Sub-Investigator

As smartphones have proliferated, so have electronic measuring devices that can connect wirelessly to them. This largely consumer-directed market is directed toward allowing health and exercise-related measurements to be accumulated and analyzed. Alongside this, medical devices like blood pressure monitors and blood glucose meters, which have been used for decades by patients themselves at home, have also been further developed to connect as part of “the internet of things.” The implications and opportunities to use these developments in clinical trials are discussed.
