2007
Objective: In this study, the reasons for dropping-out of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) at the Peritoneal Dialysis outpatient clinic, Faculty of Medicine, Kocaeli University were evaluated between September 1998 and September 2006. Material and Methods: The medical files of the CAPD patients attending our outpatient clinic were retrospectively evaluated. The data were entered into a statistical analysis program and d escriptive analyses for reasons of dropping-out of peritoneal dial ysis were performed. Results: A total of 67 patients (34 female, 33 male, median age 55.1 ± 16.5 R: 18-83 years) had dropped-out during the 8-years period. The mean duration of CAPD was 18.7 ± 18.6 months (median 13, min. 2, max. 96 months). The reasons for dropping-out of CAPD were treatment resistant peritonitis for 28 (41.8%) patients, death for 27 (40.3%) patients, ultrafiltration failure for 8 (11.9%) patients and renal transplantation for 3 (4.5%) patients. One patient was transferred to hemodialysis upon his own decision. Conclusion: Despite several clear advantages of the CAPD treatment, unfortunately many patients with end stage renal disease do not benefit from this treatment as long as desired. Peritonitis is still the leading cause of dropout of CAPD treatment.
