A neutron scattering investigation of the magnetic structure and spin correlations in Sm2CuO4

Abstract The results of polarized neutron scattering confirm that the magnetic structure of Sm 2 CuO 4 is of the La 2 CuO 4 -type. No magnetic moment of the Sm-ions induced by the Sm-Cu coupling has been found in the temperature range 4.2–300K. Two-dimensional spin fluctuations in Sm 2 CuO 4 were investigated by neutron scattering. Exchange constant of Sm 2 CuO 4 obtained from the fitting of the scattering intensities by the Chakravarty, Halperin and Nelson formula is very close to that of Nd 2 CuO 4 and is in agreement with the Raman scattering results.
