The article considers the notion of metaphoric images formed in literary fiction to indicate the event of reading. The author studies the metaphors connecting reading with Eros and Thanatos, revealing the peculiarities of how the abovementioned metaphors function in European literature from the Middle Ages to the 21 st century.
