A Comprehensive HEV Design Tool for Dual-Use Applications

1998
Abstract : New design tools configured specifically for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications are needed to achieve multiple design objectives. In Phase I the emphasis was on the development of a fully functional prototype HEV design tool. This tool served as the test bed to investigate the effects of simulation complexity on modeling accuracy and to evaluate the user interface in a design environment. The primary goal of the Phase II program is to produce an engineering design tool that will enable the user to design the power and drive trains, mobility, and thermal management of the vehicle. The HEV Design Tool will require only those inputs consistent with a preliminary design effort; detailed knowledge of the component substructure will not be required. The code interface will be devised to provide the user with the information that he needs - when he needs it - during the design process. The code will be capable of modeling both wheeled and tracked vehicles, in both series and parallel configurations, for dual-use military vehicles and commercial automotive applications.
