Overweight and obesity are widely studied because it is considered as a serious public health problem. The study is quasi-experimental, with pre- and post-intervention assessment, with group control, the sample included 50 students for the intervention group and 100 students for the group control, all students included in the study were classified as overweight or obese students through the body mass index (BMI); the proposal of intervention consisted in implementing in person and participatory issues related to nutrition, physical activity and healthy life styles, where the representatives or parents involved actively. The objectives for this research were to evaluate the effect of the integral intervention for the reduction of overweight and obesity in students from a school in the Santa Rosa Canton, El Oro Province, to characterize, according to sociodemographic items, food and clinical behavior to students with overweight and obesity in both educational units of Santa Rosa Canton, to develop the integral intervention proposed by the intervention group, to determine the result of the intervention through the comparison of BMI in the schools involved in this research, to establish the difference between the results of the surveys and the intervention process. Among the results showed a significant decrease in BMI for both sexes in the intervention group, whereas in the control group there was a significant increase in the BMI; data obtained in a period of time of six months. The prevalence of obesity decreased significantly in the intervention school, and in the case of students with overweight, 6% of the pupils reached the normal weight. This experimental research showed that it is possible to significantly reduce the prevalence of obesity in students. KEY WORDS: BMI, intervention, children, students, overweight.
