Description and Comparison of Linguistic Approaches Employed in Designing Machine Translation Systems

2011
Ever-increasing information speed has led to the creation of machine translation systems. This paper aims at describing and comparing the linguistic approaches employed in designing machine translation systems before and after 1990s based on the three criteria including: (1) speed, (2) quality, and (3) user requirements. Therefore, at first, the rule-based approaches and corpus-based approaches will be introduced and then will be compared based on the criteria given. The findings of the present research suggest that corpus-based approaches in comparison with the rule-based approaches are speedier and in a higher degree of quality, as well as they satisfy more user requirements.
