O3-5 Stroke in children with human immunodeficiency virus: a pilot study

2009
3.0 per 100,000 per year (95% confidence interval 2.5−3.7). Incidence figures for the full 12 months will be reported at the EPNS meeting. Approximately equal number of ischaemic and haemorrhagic strokes were reported. Conclusions: The incidence of childhood stroke found by this study is higher than previously reported in the United Kingdom. Childhood stroke is as common as central nervous system neoplasia in children and is an important cause of acquired brain injury. This study provides data that will facilitate the development of intervention trials aimed at improving outcome post-stroke as well as primary and secondary prevention trials.
