Deaths due to external causes represent an important challenge for the Brazilian society as they are associated to the high mortality, besides causing huge financial and social losses. In this regard – in external causes group – the ones that are classified as undefined intention events are the ones that have been object of study for public health researchers in the last years. It happens because of the possibility that in the undefined events there are deaths of other groups in the external causes’ chapter, especially those ones that result from aggression or suicide – damaging the comparisons and estimations for specific causes of unnatural deaths. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological pattern of selected external causes’ groups. In especial those ones that are classified as events which intention was undefined, in the period from 1999 to 2012 in the municipality of Sao Goncalo - RJ and in its administrative districts - as the Distribution of these undefined events is not randomized and it is associated to different social and demographic conditions. Thus, it was verified that undefined events represent the second main cause of death within the external causes’ chapter. Nevertheless, when analyzing the downsized mortality rate, they present a pattern on tax reduction in the municipality of Sao Goncalo and its Districts
