Deactivation mechanism of cation resin catalyst for esterification of acetic acid and isopropanol

2012
In order to reveal the deactivation mechanism of cation exchange resin catalyst, the effects of Fe3+ on the catalyst activity were investigated using 'acceleration deactivation' method. The structure and properties of the fresh and deactivated catalysts were characterized by SEM,element analysis,EDS,XRF and XPS techniques. The results showed that the Fe3+ adsorbed on the catalyst could replace the active H+ of sulfoacid group, which partly resulted in deactivation of the catalyst.Meanwhile, the partial loss of sulfoacid group from the catalyst was one of deactivation reasons as well.
