Stopping cross-sections of liquid water for 0.3-2.0 MeV protons

2010
Abstract We have measured stopping cross-sections of liquid water for fast H + ions in an energy range from 0.3 to 2.0 MeV. The liquid water target was prepared in vacuum by using a liquid molecular jet technique. The energy and angular distribution of outgoing projectiles after passing through the liquid target were measured at various scattering angles ranging up to 50 mrad. The experimental results have been successfully reproduced by Monte Carlo simulation calculations (GEANT4 v9.1.p03 toolkit) by taking account of the small angle multiple scattering inside the liquid. The stopping cross-sections obtained from fitting simulations are found to be in fairy good agreement with recent theoretical calculations.
