Hybrid integration of a laser diode with a planar silica waveguide

A novel technique is reported for automatically aligning a laser diode chip to a singlemode planar silica waveguide on a silicon motherboard. The technique involves only a minor modification to a standard laser. A loss of -14 dB was measured; the sources of this loss are analysed. >
