A Testbed Evaluation for an Indoor Temperature Monitoring System in Smart Homes

2018
This paper reports an experimental study to design a temperature monitoring system which helps people maintain a good level of quality of life (QoL) and manage the energy resources more efficiently. An ambient assisted living system for adjusting the temperature is designed and implemented using Sun Spot Zigbee nodes. The key challenge for the proliferation of WSNs is scarce energy. Hence energy-efficient solutions are required in all aspects of WSN design. In this paper, we implement and evaluate a threshold based monitoring method for temperature sensing to reduce energy consumption of the sensor nodes to increase the lifetime of the monitoring system. We report realistic evaluation results of threshold based method and compared the performance with respect to energy consumption and accuracy with the stream-based method. Our results suggest that the threshold-based method reduces the number of transmitted packet by more than 90% in our home-based scenario while preserving the accuracy to %97.17.
