Clinical application of meta-concepts that are essential to client change.

: This article discusses three meta-concepts that are considered to be important to most psychotherapy approaches and essential to the client change process. The concepts discussed are collaborative goal-setting, stages of change and motivation, as well as experiential avoidance and exposure. Each concept is described. Clinical and research support is provided. Therapist and client dialogue is used to illustrate each concept.
