The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for changing the operating state of an electrical machine in the freewheel mode, can be avoided in which significant voltage increases. In the freewheel mode, the individual phase terminals of an electrical machine are electrically separated from each other, in order to convert the electrical machine in a safe operating condition. According to the invention, only a part of the phase currents of the electric machine is evaluated. Based on the evaluated phase currents suitable timings for the cutting of all phase connections are determined, including the phases in which there is no evaluation of the phase currents.
