Landscape Models for Banded Vegetation Genesis

Great interest has been paid to the genesis of banded vegetation, with various hypotheses on their evolution: the pattern could have been derived from a previous denser structure through climatic or anthropic degradation (White 1971) or from a bare area through gradual colonization by vegetation that traps sand and organic materials (Boudet 1972). (1970) speculates termites may play a role in initiation of the pattern.
