SURFACING STANDARD - FUEL CONSUMPTION

1993
Since two km road sections of comparable alignment and different surfacing were not available in Finland, rolling resistance was measured on different surfacings and relationship between this and fuel consumption was determined. Tyre pressures were checked before measurement. Data were collected automatically. Rolling resistance was measured at 40 and 80 kph for at least 5 runs in each direction. The survey car is equipped with fuel consumption meter of through flow type. Consumption is normally lower on new than on old surfacing; greatest difference is 0.29 1/100 km. When fuel cost, mileage driven and speed are taken into consideration, increase in cost on "worse" surfacings is about FM 0.012. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 875360.
