The sex ratio is an important social indicator of gender equality and status of women in a society. As such, it also explains the social development of any society. The present study aims to explain the spatio-temporal pattern of sex ratio in north-eastern region of India. It is also tries to findout the correlates which are responsible for the spatio-temporal pattern of sex ratio hence, it is important to understand the concept of sex ratio. According to census of India “sex composition is one of the most important indicator which affects the whole economic, social, cultural and religious structure of a society. It indicates the relative proportion of the female and male components of any population. The term ‘Sex Ratio’ means the number of females per thousand of males”.
