Sterically Demanding Imidazolinium Salts Through the Activation and Cyclization of Formamides.

The synthesis of sterically demanding imidazolium salts (V) and (IX) via the formamide activation strategy facilitates cyclizations that are too challenging for the classical orthoformate ester cyclization protocol and thus allows the formation of more sterically hindered derivatives.
