Examining Research-Practice Partnerships Through a Complex Adaptive Systems Lens

2019
In this case study research we examined seven grant-funded research projects in Alberta involving partnerships between school authorities, university researchers, the ministry and other professional organizations. Drawing on characteristics of complex adaptive systems, data gathered through surveys, interviews and project documentation were analyzed. Cultivating partner relationships was a key element in achieving shared goals. Benefits of working in partnership included developing capacity of participating researchers, practitioners, and other partner organizations through collective knowledge building impacting educational improvement efforts more broadly. Findings from year one of the study serve to inform researchers and practitioners engaging in partnerships and conducting research to inform action.
